Chavin Salinar Transitional Bichrome Stirrup Jar
Chavin Salinar Transitional Bichrome Stirrup Jar
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin / early Salinar, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A striking stirrup, bichrome pottery jar presenting a most unusual form comprised of a flat bottomed, globular lower body from which an earspool or mace head form emerges, atop of which is a classic Chavin stirrup with a subtly flaring spout. The rounded section of the body is beautifully painted with a red on black decorative program depicting four abstract stingrays with round eyes, open mouths, and angular pointed bodies that are meticulously detailed with stylized geometric motifs. The stingray was sensibly feared by Andean humankind as its dorsal spine became a lethal weapon when this sea creature was provoked. In addition, stingray spines which had a sharp edge and poisonous venom were highly valued as blood letters used during sacrificial rituals. The bloodletting practice was believed to sustain the cosmos. Hence the stingray embodied a characteristic Pre-Columbian duality as it was both deadly and at the same time life affirming. A very special bichrome vessel, impressive for its intriguing silhouette, refined technique, highly symbolic iconography, and overall artistry. Size: 5.875" in diameter x 9.375" H (14.9 cm x 23.8 cm)
