Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche II, ca. 300 to 400 CE. Very attractive pottery stirrup vessel - jar used to store water and chicha with the spout shaped so it can be attached to one's belt. Vessel is in the form of a kneeling warrior wearing conical helmet, tunic with shoulder pads and swirling pattern, padded loin cloth and holding small shield in left hand and mace head in right. His facial expression is one of determination with almost portrait-like qualities. A very fine and attractive example! Size: 8" H (20.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Private Australian collection, acquired in London (according to owner at Sotheby's) in the early 1980's.
