Chavin Incised Blackware Jar - 600 BCE!
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, 600 to 200 BCE. A blackware stirrup vessel, thin-walled, very light to hold and with incised decorations around its shoulder and body. The spout is cylindrical, with no obvious rim. The incised designs are geometric, with an avian theme. This is an example of Chavin Group II design, which is very geometric. The figure depicted is probably from some kind of ceremony where a human would symbolically gain the powers of an animal. This is a really fabulous example of some of their signature ceramic artwork. Size: 6.6" W x 9.4" H (16.8 cm x 23.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private Ventura County, CA collection
