Description
Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 700 BCE. A very large and extravagant bronze pin used to fasten a cloak, cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, featuring a variant of a "master of animals" design on the face. This iconographical theme is common in Luristan bronze work, usually depicting a god-like figure in the center (in this case, an abstract interpretation that looks like a column with phytomorphic extensions), flanked by two symmetrical animals, in this case a pair of horses rearing on their hind legs. A superb piece, replete with expert artistry and intriguing iconography. Size: 8.25" H (21 cm); 8.625" H (21.9 cm) on included custom stand.
