Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 700 BCE. Two hair or clothes pins made from lost wax casting of bronze, each with a long, cylindrical pin capped by a "master of animals" style motif. This motif is common in Luristan bronze work, always depicting a god-like figure in the center, holding two symmetrical animals by their necks, thought to be an image of power and control. On both of these, the god is an eagle or other raptor and the animals appear to be lionnesses. Size: 1.7" W x 7.4" H (4.3 cm x 18.8 cm); 7.8" H (19.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
