Description
**First Time At Auction**
Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. 20th century CE. A carved and finely-detailed wooden mask of an ancestor. The face itself has a prominent nose, thin mouth, carved facial wrinkles, and raised eyes with inlaid white seashells. A lengthy crest arches across the top of the head, and colorful sections of knotted "hair" strings are tied through the perforation holes with hues of violet, lavender, and fuchsia. The face of the mask displays a layer of black pigment underneath a layer of chalky-white pigment. Size: 7" H (17.8 cm).
Provenance: ex-Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired before 1970

Condition
Bottom of mask has a broken stick fragment, perhaps part of a larger tool. Age-commensurate surface wear, fading and wear to pigment, small nicks to nose and face, otherwise very good.
