Description
Papua New Guinea, late 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a carved wooden face, elongated, with a curved hole instead of a mouth/chin, and a long nose and deepset eyes below a large forehead. There is original white and black pigment, with much remaining under the eyes and above the chin. This item may be a gable mask, wooden masks that were woven into the fabric of a house and which scholars believe are female personifications of the house. Size: 5.75" L x 5.8" W x 20.1" H (14.6 cm x 14.7 cm x 51.1 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.

Condition
Some stable cracks to the wood; faded pigment gives it a nice aged look. Has modern small attached hook for suspension on back.
