Description

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, East Sepik River province, North Coast, Boiken peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A wonderful and vibrant wooden ceremonial mask featuring fiber cords and cowrie shells. The wood is slightly convex in form and combines anthropomorphic with abstract elements. The elongated visage is comprised of eight protruding horns, tab-like ears, a wide nose, pointed lips, and an angular chin. The eyes are inlaid with two white shells, and the ears and septum are perforated and hung with twisted fiber cords. The surface is brightly painted with linear and circular motifs in red, yellow, white, and black hues. A beautiful and well-preserved mask representative of an ancestral figure! Size: 13.5" L x 7.5" W (34.3 cm x 19 cm)
