DESCRIPTION: 18k (tested) military medal with enamel S, N, Y, N.G. (State of New York National Guard). "Ratione Aut Vi" (Latin, by reason or by force) to red enamel circle below white enamel V and diamond encrusted 9. Engraved verso "August 19th, 1878. The General and Staff of the 3rd Brigade. To Lieut. Col. Wm. Seward, Jr. A.A.G." Manufactured and issued by Tiffany & Co. PROVENANCE: William H. Seward, Jr. (1839-1920) was a Brigadier General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was the youngest son of William H. Seward, Sr. who was a one-time New York Governor and the US Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Seward, Jr. was appointed Lt. Colonel to the 9th New York Heavy Artillery and later promoted to Colonel, then Brigadier-General. MEASUREMENTS: 1" x 1". 3.8 dwt (5.9 gr). CONDITION: Light wear. Missing three diamonds. Roughness to top where medal was likely detached from pin or hook.
