DESCRIPTION: 18k (tested) gold charm depicting shield/crest to front and engraved "Nisi Dominus Frustra" (Latin: Everything is in vain without God). Engraved verso "Gen. Wm. Seward with the love of the consistency of the Brighton Heights Reformed Church". PROVENANCE: William H. Seward, Jr. (1839-1920) was a Brigadier General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was the youngest son of William H. Seward, Sr. who was a one-time New York Governor and the US Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Seward, Jr. was appointed Lt. Colonel to the 9th New York Heavy Artillery and later promoted to Colonel, then Brigadier-General. MEASUREMENTS: 1-1/4" x 7/8". 4.9 dwt (7.6 gr). CONDITION: Light wear.
