Description
**First Time At Auction**

Africa, Nigeria, early 20th century CE. A carved wooden figural finial for a ceremonial staff honoring Shango (also known as Jakuta), a royal ancestor of the Yoruba who was the third king (Alafin)of the Oyo kingdom, is generally revered as one of the most powerful Yoruba leaders, and was deified after his death. This piece depicts a standing figure - a worshipper of Shango - holding a tool or weapon (perhaps as an offering) in each hand for the deity. The figure is wearing simple garments, presents a visage with large eyes, bold features, and diamond-shaped scarification marks, and is topped by a plaited blue coiffure with a headdress adorned by a blade-shaped finial. Added red, yellow, and blue pigments as well as a red and white glass seed bead necklace further embellish the figure. Below the figure is a nice handle with an integral loop for attachments. Size: 17.5" H (44.4 cm); 18.25" H (46.4 cm) on included custom stand.

A staff like this is called an Ose Shango staff, carried and danced with by members of the Shango cult. Shango is the Yoruba deity of thunder and lightning also associated with virility, justice, and dance.
