West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden female figure standing atop an integral circular base with delineated legs. A slender torso bears a strand of black trade beads as well as several rows of incised triangular shapes beneath pendulous breasts. Rounded shoulders support lengthy arms, one of which holds a small bracelet of cowry shells, and an enormous head rests atop a thick neck. Almond eyes, ritual scarification marks, a broad nose, full lips, and cupped ears comprise the visage, with a conical coiffure decorated with dozens of incised bands and a top knot above. Lustrous brown patina covers the majority of this fabulous example. Size: 2.75" W x 11.25" H (7 cm x 28.6 cm).

Condition
Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small hairline fissures on legs, arms, and torso, with some fading to finer incised details, and some minor inactive insect damage. Nice earthen deposits and lustrous brown patina throughout.
