Western Africa, western Niger and eastern Burkina Faso, Keguru, Fulani, or Zarma peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A forged-copper bracelet currency called a manilla. The openwork circular piece has a casting nubbin protruding from the top, a wrist opening on the opposite side, and minimalist linear motifs incised on the surfaces. Manilla like this example were worn to portray the wealth of an individual and to act as ceremonial currency pieces during significant transactions. Size: 4.375" W x 4.875" H (11.1 cm x 12.4 cm)
