Description
Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, early 20th century CE. This is a dark wood carving of a standing woman holding her toddler on her back. The child holds tightly to her breasts; both have carved faces and other physical details. A staff like this is called an Ose Shango staff, carried and danced with by members of the Shango cult. Shango is the Yoruba deity of thunder and lightning; the woman carved on the staff is meant to represent a worshipper of Shango. There is a fine similar piece in the Brooklyn Museum, NYC. Size: 4.25" W x 21.25" H (10.8 cm x 54 cm)

Condition
There is some old damage that is now covered by the same dark patina as the rest of the piece; one side of the flange is missing. Otherwise the piece is in excellent condition with clear features and form.
