Description
West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A dark wood carving of a standing woman with an enormous rectangular crest on top of her head. A staff like this is called an Ose Shango staff, carried and danced with by members of the Shango cult. Shango is the Yoruba deity of thunder and lightning; the woman carved on the staff is meant to represent a worshipper of Shango. Size: 5.5" W x 21.5" H (14 cm x 54.6 cm); 22" H (55.9 cm) on included custom stand.
