Description

This is a very fine old Yoruba Maternity staff of the Oshe Shango cult. The staff is quite lovely, with a well carved female effigy of a Mother with her child, shown holding a ceremonial sash on her shoulders and her head, turned slightly off axis giving the sculpture a sense of movement. The staff is surmounted by the double edged axe which represents the God, Shango. According to Yoruba beliefs, Shango the god of lightning, enriches his faithful and protects motherhood. The faithful will rub and polish the staff during prayers. This example has a well handled surface patina suggesting years of field use. The staff measures 18.75 inches on its professional custom display stand. Yoruba peoples, Nigeria, Africa. Provenance: Ex Amyas Naegele gallery, NYC.
