West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved male Ere Ibeji twin figure with large feet and parted legs, delineated genitalia, protruding abdomen, hanging arms with a metal ring around each, rounded shoulders, and a thick neck. The head displays almond-shaped eyes with applied wooden pupils, large ears, facial scarification marks around the cheeks and nose, and an intricately-carved upswept coiffure which is embellished with organic blue indigo pigment. He stands atop a circular base with an incised cross-hatch pattern around the circumference. Size: 9.375" H (23.8 cm).

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA
