Description
**Originally Listed At $250**
Western Africa, Ivory Coast, Baule (Baoule) people, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figure of a monkey, shown standing on a large, thick, discoid pedestal. The monkey leans forward, paws touching in front of his body, his feet flat on the pedestal. His head and face are large for his body, with a leering grin and deep set eyes on either side of a very long nose. The top of his head has the remains of some offerings on it. Monkey figures are used in the Mbra cult, and they are often shown holding eggs or a bowl containing an egg in their paws - this detail may be missing from the outstretched arms. The monkey figure would be owned by a family or a diviner and it is thought to feed on offerings - hence the remains of some poured over its head. Size: 8.4" W x 13.85" H (21.3 cm x 35.2 cm)
Provenance: Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
