Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pende peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely elder female figure hand-carved from hard wood. The female presents her forward-leaning pose with a conical lower body dressed in a skirt held by a knotted cord, delineated arms draped along her abdomen, and a slender neck. Her exaggerated head displays recessed coffee-bean-shaped eyes, contoured cheek bones, full lips, a flared nose, and cupped ears, all beneath a finely-incised coiffure with a slender top knot. Her advanced age is depicted by her raised clavicle bones and shoulder blades, sunken facial features, and pendulous breasts, and her body is covered in a gorgeous dark-brown patina. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 2.125" W x 6.75" H (5.4 cm x 17.1 cm); 7.375" H (18.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Surface wear commensurate with age, minor nicks to base, arms, head, and top knot, with light fading to some carved details, and one stable hairline fissure along one eyebrow. Light earthen deposits and fabulous patina throughout.
