Description
West Africa, Togo, Losso (Nawbda) people, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A disproportionate figure of a highly abstract form, carved from a single piece of wood. The bare breasts, herniated belly button, and slit for genitalia indicate a woman, intended to represent an ancestor for healing and protection. The surface has developed a lovely luster and patina, possibly from rubbing oils, blood, or other offerings into the wood. Size: 3.75" L x 2.75" W x 11.75" H (9.5 cm x 7 cm x 29.8 cm); 13" H (33 cm) on included custom stand.
