Item Details
Description
Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba peoples, ca. early 19th to late 20th century CE. A lovely female shrine figure that is hand-carved from hardwood and presents with a stylized cylindrical form. The woman stands atop a flat-bottomed abdomen and features a bulging belly, slender arms held beneath an incised linear motif on her womb, pendulous breasts, and a plateaued shoulder and clavicle. Her elongated head rests atop a thick neck and bears coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a bulging rectangular nose, pursed lips centered on a tapered chin, and scarification marks on each cheek. Her backswept coiffure is decorated with dozens of petite triangular impressions on top as well as dense latticework patterns on the verso. Size: 3.2" W x 14.2" H (8.1 cm x 36.1 cm)
