Description
**Originally Listed At $250**
West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden female figure with delineated legs, a cylindrical abdomen, pendulous breasts, and sinuous arms tracing down to the slender waist. Resting upon the stocky neck is the elongated head which boasts hemispherical eyes, a bar-shaped nose, full lips, cupped ears, and a pointed chin. Given this figure's protective role, it was most likely placed on or around an altar as part of a group of various 'bateba' figures (literal translation of "bateba phuwe" is "normal/ordinary carved wooden figure"). The precise meaning of each figure's shape and posture is difficult to ascertain, since these carvings were created as the result of a seer's vision for an afflicted individual. Size: 3.25" W x 21.25" H (8.3 cm x 54 cm); 22.7" H (57.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away.
