**First Time At Auction**
Europe, ca. 17th century CE. A trio of cast iron keys, each with large, round grips, thick shafts, and intricate notches and bits - two in cross form, one curved. After the fall of the Roman Empire, locks and keys remained basically unchanged for 1500 years - locksmiths created painstakingly ornate, often beautiful keys like this one. Women of elite and middle class households were "keepers of the keys", often wearing a ring of keys on their belts. Size of largest key: 2.8" W x 7.6" H (7.1 cm x 19.3 cm)
