Description
Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, mid-20th century CE. A delightful and totemic carving of a large-beaked bird - probably a hornbill - standing on a mask-like human face atop a rounded pedestal. The bird's feet perch on the forehead of the mask, its eyes bulging and beak downcurved to almost touch the chest. A ridged crest is carved up the bird's back. Black pigment dominates the sculpture, with white and pinkish-orange details on bird, face, and base. Size: 4.2" L x 3" W x 17.35" H (10.7 cm x 7.6 cm x 44.1 cm); 19.2" H (48.8 cm) on included custom stand.
