Item Details

Description

Published circa June 16, 1967. A full sized Life Special Issue, in good condition. The Six-Day War, also known as the June War, was fought between June 5 and 10, 1967 by Israel and the neighboring states of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Relations between Israel and its neighbors had never normalized following the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. In the period leading up to June 1967, tensions became dangerously heightened. In reaction to the mobilization of Egyptian forces along the Israeli border in the Sinai Peninsula, Israel launched a series of preemptive air strikes against Egyptian airfields. The Egyptians, caught totally by surprise, lost nearly their entire Egyptian air force, gaining Israel complete air superiority. Simultaneously, the Israelis launched a ground offensive into the Gaza Strip and the Sinai, which, yet again, caught the Egyptians by surprise. After some initial resistance, Egyptian leader Gamal Nasser ordered the evacuation of the Sinai. Israeli forces rushed westward in pursuit of the Egyptians, inflicting heavy losses upon the Egyptians, and thereby capturing the Sinai Peninsula from the retreating Egyptian forces. Nasser then, inexplicably, induced Syria and Jordan to begin attacks on Israel claiming that Egypt had defeated the Israeli air strike. Israeli counterattacks against Jordan and Syria resulted in the seizure of East Jerusalem, and Judea and Samaria from the Jordanians, and retaliation against Syria resulted in Israel's occupation of the Golan Heights.
