[NEWSPAPER]. Deseret News. Great Salt Lake City, U. T. : W. Richards Editor and Proprietor. Saturday, Jan. 8, 1853. Vol. 3 No. 4. 4 pp. Approximately 22 x 16 inches, printed in six columns on white paper. Upper quarter of front page somewhat dust soiled, two small tears in left margin in folds, light rubbing, else fine. The first column on the front page has an article about a baboon "Le Vaillant's Baboon". The second column has two poems, one to "Farewell to "Fifty-Two" and the other "Introduction of the Year 1853" by Miss E. R. Snow. Third column has an article "History of Joseph Smith [January, 1837]" that takes up the balance of the page. There are Letters to the Editor, by B. F. Grouard, Asa Lyman and Charles C. Rich amongst others, local stories, reports from the legislative assembly, "Capt. Stansbury's Report (Howard Stansbury surveyed the Great Salt Lake in 1849 for two years and issued his report in 1852), and several others plus lots of advertisements.
