Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, Moche I period, ca. 100 to 550 CE. An early example of a Moche stirrup vessel with a rare and fantastical iconography. It shows a human figure standing on a mountain, whose bulk forms the shape of the vessel aside from its stirruped handle with short spout and rolled rim. Surrounding the figure is a variety of animals and human figures. A human figure is being flung from the mountain as a sacrifice. Does this image depict true events that happened in the Moche world, or was the creation of artistic representations like this one enough to satisfy hungry gods? Size: 3.55" W x 7.5" H (9 cm x 19 cm)
