Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste, Nicoya Region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A pale green jadeite celt (hand axe), finely carved, depicting a tropical bird-human effigy with a pointed beak, crest-like headdress, and touching "hands" on the blade-shaped torso. It is pierced laterally at the neck for suspension. Artisans made this piece using string cutting and a drill, then smoothed it using sandstone. The ancient Costa Ricans were influenced by the Olmec to their north, and may have even repurposed Mesoamerican hand axes for their own purposes. Comes with custom stand. Size: 0.8" L x 0.4" W x 3.45" H (2 cm x 1 cm x 8.8 cm); height on stand: 3.75" (9.5 cm).
