Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. Finely carved from a pale mint green jade with almond brown inclusions, an avian axe god, the lower section a nice celt form, the upper section representing a perky bird denizen of the Costa Rican rainforest with a delicately delineated beak, striated vertical bands contouring the beak, two protrusions defining its crest, and wings held close to its body. In the Pre-Columbian World, birds were regarded as animals of the celestial realm that served as messengers between humankind and their deities. Laterally drilled behind the beak. Size: 1.625" W x 3.25" H (4.1 cm x 8.3 cm)

Old chip to blade of celt and a couple of surface inclusions/fissures inherent to the stone. Otherwise excellent. Suspension cord in photo not included.
