Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. Carved from a seafoam green jade with beige and white inclusions, a miniature avian axe god, the lower section a nice celt form, the upper section representing a perky bird denizen of the Costa Rican rainforest with a delicately delineated beak, partially drilled round eyes, and two protruding areas perhaps representing crest feathers. In the Pre-Columbian World, birds were regarded as animals of the celestial realm that served as messengers between humankind and their deities. Laterally drilled behind the beak for suspension. Size: .875" W x 1.75" H (2.2 cm x 4.4 cm)
