Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, north coast Peru, Moche, Phase IV, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A remarkably ornate and quite impressive pottery stirrup vessel surmounted by a seated warrior, elaborately dressed and grasping a mace in one hand and a shield in the other. The spherical vessel is also intricately hand-painted with stylized imagery of weapons, with maces and shields, as well as a spotted hide, perhaps that of a jaguar, beneath the figure. Hacha or axe head-shaped adornements protrude from the figure's head and back - highlighting his role as warrior. Note how circular designs are repeated throughout his dress, perhaps a further reference to the fur of a jaguar. The jaguar was a symbol of power and kingship throughout the pre-Columbian New World; for the Moche and others, it symbolized a fierceness as well as an individuality that they identified with leaders in their society. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. Size: 8.3" L x 6.3" W x 10.5" H (21.1 cm x 16 cm x 26.7 cm)

A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery. Oddly enough, few Moche artists would have seen jaguars as they are not indigenous to the coast; jaguars prefer moist forest conditions. However, scholars believe that some cubs were transported over the mountains for Moche rituals, and it is also possible that some jaguars wandered down the coast.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase.
