Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, Phase IV, ca. 450 to 700 CE. A hand-built pottery stirrup vessel depicting a pair of elaborate bird warriors. Each avian anthropoid is outfitted with a jaguar headdress, medallion-studded belt, boots, a pronged weapon, and enormous wings for intimidation. Scholars posit that these bird warriors were perhaps simply men wearing avian masks and feathered costumes, however they would have still would have been a frightening scene on any battlefield! Size: 5.25" W x 10.6" H (13.3 cm x 26.9 cm)
