Description
Superb Pre-Columbian Teotihuacan serpentine funerary mask, Mexico, circa 500-800 AD. From the enigmatic Teotihuacan culture a carved human mask with tab-like ears. Teotihuacan masks stand out for both their style and execution quality. They follow a standardized model, with the face in the shape of an inverted spherical triangle with the lower tip cut off, the forehead wide, the nose triangular and flattened, the thick lips parted, and the brows strongly figured. Shells, obsidian, mother-of-pearl, or turquoise mosaics were first put in to fill the depressions for the eyes, lips, and, sometimes, cheeks. 6" x 5.7"
