Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Moche, Phase V, ca. 650 to 850 CE. A delightful pottery of stirrup vessel in the form of a seated figure, likely a lord or shaman, dressed elaborately with a plumed headdress and holding a bird, perhaps an eagle. The Moche believed that birds were envoys between humankind and the deities of the celestial realm, so the broad flight patterns of eagles were thought to represent solar movements and thus imbued them with special powers. Perhaps this figure is a shaman or lord attempting to converse with the gods via his avian companion! Size: 7.5" W x 8.1" H (19 cm x 20.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
