Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Moche V, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A classic Moche form, the stirrup vessel, with the body in the form of the transformative god Ai Apec, with a tall, black bird on one arm and a monkey on the other. Ai Apec's face is marked by jaguar fangs and deep wrinkles; around his neck is a necklace of jaguar heads, and his tunic resembles a speckled jaguar coat. There is something uncanny about the animals, who are as tall as the god, and who face to the sides, while the god stares outward at the viewer. A fascinating glimpse into an ancient religion, this piece was made to be placed into a grave. Size: 6.6" W x 7.75" H (16.8 cm x 19.7 cm)
