Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. This is a gorgeous intact example of one of the classic forms of pre-Columbian pottery -- the Moche stirrup vessel, here shaped like two peaks of the Andes, painted with a weapons bundle symbol on the body of the mountains, which is often found in Moche battle and sacrifice scenes, with a standing figure between the peaks. The figure wears a headdress with what looks like two ears atop it, earrings, a necklace/pectoral, and a skirt. It stands with one hand raised to its brow, as if exhausted, or looking out over the vista; with the other hand, it holds on to the mountain peak. Size: 5.9" L x 6" W x 8.25" H (15 cm x 15.2 cm x 21 cm)
