ENGLISH TRANSFER-PRINTED AMERICAN HISTORICAL CERAMIC PLATTER, transfer design in black, form molded with well and tree, raised, molded feet on base. Impressed with "W.R. & Co" on a shield between a horse and a lion, and transfer-printed with "VIEW of the / CAPITOL AT / WASHINGTON" under an eagle with shield and spread wings and the initials "W.R" below. William Ridgway & Co., Staffordshire. Circa 1845. 14" x 19".
Less than expected wear on interior design, more so on outer rim, one flake on rim, several flakes on one foot.

Provenance: From a Virginia private collection.
Catalogue Note: "View of the Capitol at Washington" is based on William H. Bartlett's print in his American Scenery series, first printed in 1837. Pattern and source referenced on Transferware Collectors Club Database, ID # 4045.
