ENGLISH TRANSFER-PRINTED NAUTICAL AMERICAN HISTORICAL CERAMIC PLATES, LOT OF TWO, transfer design of a steam sailing ship in center with a transfer-printed rope and chain on inside and outside of marley, all in a sepia brown tone. Both impressed "COPELAND" with a "V" below on base, along with a transfer-printed mark of "L. STRAUS & SONS / 42 & 44 WARREN ST / NEW YORK". Copeland and Spode, Staffordshire. Circa 1875. 9 3/8" D.
Excellent, undamaged condition.
Provenance: From a private Cape Cod, Massachusetts collection.
Catalogue Note: The Straus family moved from Georgia following the Civil War and established L. Straus & Sons in New York City in the late 1860s as importers of china and ceramics.
