Description
STAFFORDSHIRE TRANSFER-PRINTED AMERICAN HISTORICAL CERAMIC TRAY OR SMALL PLATTER, having dark blue transfer design in "Peace and Plenty" pattern depicting Cincinnatus holding a basket of produce with a shield depicting an eagle and "PEACE / PLENTY" and sheaves of wheat, having molded handles extended from rim on opposite sides. Impressed "CLEWS / WARRANTED / STAFFORDSHIRE" beneath a crown on base. Ralph & James Clews, Cobridge, Staffordshire, England. 1814-1834. 8 1/4" x 6 3/8".
Excellent undamaged condition with minor wear on the interior.

Catalogue Note: The Transferware Collectors Club notes in their database that the design is based on the "Roman citizen soldier Cincinnatus, who in 460 BC was created dictator to battle a threat against Rome. In 16 days he defeated Rome's foe, gave up his dictatorship and returned to his farm. This example of selfless service to his republic became a model for the Founding Fathers. George Washington was called the American Cincinnatus as he too returned to private life after the Revolution."
