Greek South Italic Terracotta Lebes Gamikos
Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, South Italy, ca. 4th century BCE. A lovely pottery lebes gamikos. This form presents a characteristically round-bottomed bowl with twin handles and a stand, quite an elegant form. Adorning the surface are impressed tongues embellishing the shoulder and glazed bands encircling the body. A sweet example of ancient pottery! Size: 4" H (10.2 cm).

The lebes gamikos, or "nuptial lebes," (plural - lebetes gamikoi) is a form of ancient Greek Pottery used in marriage ceremonies (literally, it means marriage vase). It was probably used in the ritual sprinkling of the bride with water before the wedding. In form, it has a large bowl-like body and a stand that can be long or short. Painted scenes are placed on either the body of the vessel or the stand.

Provenance: Ex-private collection of Frank Sternberg, Zurich, Switzerland, collected between 1980-1985.
