Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery lebes gamikos with a flared foot, an apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, a squat rim that once held a lid, and a pair of high-arching handles. The cream-slipped vessel is decorated with rings of red and black pigment on the body, a red ring surrounding the rim, and black-painted frets radiating across the shoulder. Lebes gamikos are important and highly-symbolic vessels used primarily in times of great happiness - for brides during their wedding ceremonies - or immense sorrow - for women who died without having been married. Size: 3" W x 3.1" H (7.6 cm x 7.9 cm).
Provenance: ex-estate of Roy Green, Birmingham, Alabama acquired before 2015 from major New York galleries

Condition
Original lid missing. Minor abrasions and nicks to rim, foot, and handles, with light encrustations, and minor fading to original pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and traces of original pigment throughout.
