Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a charming redware ceramic pot with a small spout and a man's face in relief on the rim of the jar, including almond-shaped eyes, pointed nose, and extended mouth and ears. Michoacan pottery is part of the fine West Mexican tradition of stylized human shapes; at the time, Michoacan was a power in Mexico that rivaled Teotihuacan and people living in the Michoacan cities would have had a variety of pottery available to them both for domestic use in life and to placed within their graves in death. Size: 4" x 5" x 2-1/4".
