Item Details

Description

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Northern Highlands, Recuay culture, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel of a sizable form depicting an egg-shaped phytomorphic form, perhaps a gourd or a stylized ear of maize. The bulbous body rests on a rounded but surprisingly stable base and has a tapered upper body surmounted by a cylindrical spout with an integral bale handle. The red ground color is accentuated with swaths of white pigment applied atop the body as well as petite stripes coursing atop the bale handle. Size: 7.75" L x 5.125" W x 9.125" H (19.7 cm x 13 cm x 23.2 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Condition

Handle and body repaired from several large pieces, with small chips and visible adhesive residue along break lines. Abrasions and fading to pigment commensurate with age, with fire-darkening to several areas of body, a few small spalls, and light encrustations. Nice preservation to phytomorphic form.
