Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Vicus culture, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery jar of a round-bottomed form with a gently carinated spherical body, a cylindrical spout protruding from the verso, a stirrup-form handle, and a tall zoomorphic head rising from the front. The stylized feline face bears a bulbous nose in front of a pair of bulging eyes, perky ears, and a gaping mouth filled with conical nubbins representing teeth. The russet-hued vessel is decorated with areas of black and cream spots reminiscent of a jaguar. Size: 7" Diameter x 8" H (17.8 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired from Heritage Auctions in 2004

Condition
Proper left ear reattached to top of head with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Restoration to mouth and some areas beneath along neck, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and fading to surface pigment, with light encrustations, and very light pitting. Nice preservation to most decorative motifs. Old inventory label beneath base.
