Description
Pre-Columbian, Recuay culture, Peru, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE. This is a unique mold-made hollow pottery vessel whose body is a corpulent fish with low fins, a small tail, and wide, staring eyes; rising from its back is a wide neck with no distinct rim. The Recuay was a highland culture of ancient Peru, but they had extensive contact with the Moche people on the coast. Size: 12.75" L x 3.75" W x 6" H (32.4 cm x 9.5 cm x 15.2 cm).
Provenance: Ex-private Story collection, Denver, CO, acquired in 1950s.
