Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Recuay, ca. 500 BCE. An attractive polychrome vessel of a globular form, the body comprised of three lobes that rise to a flared rim. At the interstices of the three lobes upon the neck are what appear to be serpent motifs. A horizontal register wrapped around the shoulder of the vessel features a spotted pattern, perhaps a reference to jaguar pelt or snakeskin - both the wild feline and the serpent possessing layers of meaningful symbolism in the Pre-Columbian world. Size: 8.25" W x 8.125" H (21 cm x 20.6 cm)
