Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel with a spherical, round-bottomed form. The vessel has sloping shoulders which taper upwards to a pair of cylindrical spouts joined by a stirrup-shaped handle arching in between. The painted decorative program depicts a pair of "Horrible Bird" manifestations which, with slender legs and downturned heads, feast on the flesh of a disembodied trophy head. Both birds have colorful feathers in hues of red, orange, ochre-yellow, and grey outlined in black pigment, and one bird has an additional pair of trophy heads hanging from its waist. Size: 2.4" W x 3.625" H (6.1 cm x 9.2 cm).
Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Small chips to body, spouts, and handle, with fading to some areas of pigmentation, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and pigmentation remains throughout.
