Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast of Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 300 CE. An impressive pottery stirrup vessel presenting a globular body skillfully hand-painted with a mythical being - perhaps a combination of a bird, feline, and serpent - holding a trophy head, a club, and a fruit. Body draped over the top of the globular vessel, the mesmerizing figure presents a huge, almost-leonine head wearing a headdress with serpentine plumage and a textile-form body flanked by a pair of snakes. All is surmounted by a pair of conical spouts connected via a bridged handle. Size: 5" Diameter x 6.4" H (12.7 cm x 16.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, excavated or purchased in Peru in the 1960s, thence by descent to present owners

#181624
Condition
Rounded base creates slight wobble, but vessel is still stable and can stand independently. Professionally repaired with restoration and repainting over most break lines, though some are still visible. Minor chipping to spout and small nicks and abrasions to surface as shown, all commensurate with age. Nice presentation and great pigments.
