Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A mesmerizing hand-built terracotta vessel depicting a male cargador (carrier), leaning forward with folded arms wresting upon upraised knees, and an expressive visage with large coffee bean eyes, a prominent nose, parted lips, and a jutting chin adorned with large round ear ornaments and an incised striated headband, emerging before the olla that he carries. Such bearers provided a pivotal service to their communities, because the wheel was not used to assist vehicles in transporting burdens. Curiously archaeologists, in their investigations, have only found wheels attached to miniature objects that resemble toys. Nice remains of red pigment and stucco, wonderful areas of manganese deposits. Size: 7.5" L x 5.375" W x 6" H (19 cm x 13.7 cm x 15.2 cm)
