Description
Pre-Columbian, Classic Maya, modern day Honduras, ca. 250 to 900 CE. This is a pinkish-white slip painted pottery bowl (on a darker red volcanic clay) with a figure eight design around its body and twin saurian heads as small handles on either side. It is likely that this piece was made by potters hoping to mimic the alabaster bowls favored by the Mayan elite; this bowl would most likely have belonged to someone who would today be considered "aspiring middle class". The saurian heads have delightful large eyes. Size: 6.25" W x 3.2" H (15.9 cm x 8.1 cm).
